Welcome

This month’s London Mapping Festival enewsletter provides a good smattering of LMF supporters’ news along with a list of events as long as your arm – so there’s plenty to look forward to. Also, a special congratulations go to a team of six dedicated runners who completed the London marathon and raised a considerable sum for LMF’s chosen charity, MapAction. A huge well done from the LMF team!

FREE talk on
The Wonderground

As part of the LMF, The British Cartographic Society is delighted to announce that London Transport Museum’s Head Curator, Claire Dobbin, will be giving a FREE talk during its annual symposium next month. The talk is open to everyone irrespective of whether they have registered for the BCS Symposium or not.

This talk will reveal the fascinating history behind MacDonald Gill’s distinctive decorative poster maps, produced for London Underground between 1914 and 1932.

Mind the Map Exhibition Opens

This month sees the opening of a new five month long exhibition about the inspiration, history and creativity behind London transport maps.

The exhibition, Mind the Map: inspiring art, design and cartography, is now open until 28 October 2012 and draws on the Museum’s outstanding map collection to explore the themes of journeys, identity and publicity. The exhibition is the largest of its kind and includes previously unseen historic material and exciting new artworks. Find out more.


UEL Taster Day
for Architecture, Computing & Engineering

UEL is running an undergraduate taster course on 20 June 2012 in a range of specialisms including Architecture, Design and Innovation, Computing and Engineering. During this one day course they will be holding a series of lectures, workshops and seminars together with exciting hands on activities in the laboratories and studios to give prospective students a better insight into what careers in their subject areas entail. London Map Fair – FREE to attend and you could even find the original sat. nav!

16 – 17 June 2012, RGS, London

Now in its 30th year, the London Map Fair is the oldest and largest specialist fair of its kind in Europe. Leading international map dealers exhibit annually in the historic surroundings of the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore. Visitors to the fair will find maps, sea charts, atlases, travel books and globes made between the fifteenth-century and the twentieth, covering all regions of the world. Read more.

Launch Day for Intergraph Well Attended

Intergraph and Sterling Power Group, UK reseller for ERDAS & GeoMedia software, held a well-attended launch day at the London Transport Museum.

The ‘New Dimensions’ agenda included customer presentations of experience with Apollo, data capture across desk, web & mobile and dynamic GIS.

Attendees from government, defence, system integrators and commercial companies also learned about advanced data management within enterprise data production. Contact for more details


 

Six Run in Aid at London Marathon

On Sunday 22 April, six intrepid runners took part in the London Marathon in aid of MapAction awareness for its emergency mapping service. Together its six runners have raised over £26,000 – an incredible achievement, which is already making an important difference to the charity’s work. Read article and see more pics.
