Cartographic Design Surgery
with Mary Spence MBE
A good map is one that communicates an intended message in a clear and concise manner. Have you prepared a map and not been convinced that it works well? To help unravel the mysteries of good cartographic design, delegates are invited to bring along a map to Mapping Showcase 2011 for a free, one-to-one consultation and advice on improving its design, legibility and presentation.
Mary is Project Manager at Global Mapping Ltd where part of her work involves applying cartographic principles to enhance mapping produced from GIS data. She is also a freelance consultant specialising in all aspects of map design. Her professional career spans over 30 years (nearly 40 but don’t tell anyone!) in cartographic publishing culminating in being awarded an MBE in 2004 for Services to Cartographic Design. Mary is a Past President of BCS, a Chartered Geographer and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
